Kitchen table and chairs....REVEAL!!!

WOW!! I can't believe this is done!!  Wooooot!  Just in time for Sonny's birthday dinner!  I am so excited to be sharing this with you all as it was truly a labor of love.  Just a little recap on this project...our old kitchen table was big.  Too big.  Like....you had to be skinnier than Kate Moss to fit between the long end and the wall.  Apparently we have a large furniture problem in our house....I guess size does matter after all!  Har har.  Anyway...here is a pic of our kitchen table taking up a ton o' room in our little breakfast nook:

Even Jagger is shaking his fists in frustration at the size of the table.  "Darn you table!!!  Trapping me in this corner!!!!!"

So we sold that table at our garage sale (read about that success here) and I scored a Craigslist pedestal table for $25 bucks!!  Wow!  Perfect size, but no leaf, and no screws to hold the top together (what the)...but all that was easily fixable!

Isn't she looooovely!!!  Isn't she wonderful!!  Yup...she's my baby!  There was some debate between Sonny and I on what route we wanted to take this table in the way of color....but we both agreed that our house needs some freshening and lightening up....so what better way to that then go a nice pure white!

My next goal was to find chairs on the cheap...and good ol' Craigslist came through again!  Check out these ugly beauties (and more on them here)

Oh yeah!!  They were old, stained, missing one of the medallions, ripped....and only $30 total for all of them!!  The woman who I got them from had started to sand down one of them....so she said that one was free.  FREE?  You saved me work!  I should be paying YOU!  But I, of course, did not say that and threw my money at her and ran before she changed her mind.  Then after much debate on fabric (read about that here) we were ready to rock!

I really won't bore you with all the details, as the entire blogosphere is filled with how-to's on how to paint and recover by people who are much better and more in tune than I....but I will tell you how I went about tackling the geometric fabric I went with.  I was actually pretty terrified of  it because I knew that if I got it just a little bit off, it would be so noticeable.  So after cutting the foam and wrapping the batting, I laid out the fabric and made sure that I had enough to wrap around.  I decided...just to keep everything straight, to use the fabric itself to make my cut. I am fully aware that it has nothing to do with the price of beans...but just wanted to keep everything on the 90.

See how I'm using that line as a guide.  I know...it's photographic genius.  Anyway, I also used that same concept when beginning to wrap the fabric.  I lined up the largest, straight part of the chair with one of the lines on the fabric and that's how I would keep all the fabric straight.

Anyway, as riveting and enlightening as that all was (really?  Line up the straight lines with the other straight lines?  Genius!!!!)...the final result came out so super splendiferous that I can't hardly wait to show you?  Ready?  Ta da!!!!

How outstanding is this?  Come on!  It's pretty dang snazzy!  Its such a complete 180 from it's humble beginnings!  And look....I even added a special little ma-jigger where the medallions used to be:

Isn't that a cute little detail?  For less than a buck at Joann's.  You can see my little flaw there....but just don't look!  Instead...let us gaze upon the chair in it's full glory

GORG-EOUS!!!!  I am so proud of myself....here's more gratuitous table shots...including the inaugural "breakfast for dinner" for the kiddos and taco night for Sonny's birthday.

Gotta love happy cake face at the new table.  And it definitely tested the clear coat finish...which held up beautifully by the way!  I am just head over heels for this table, and it's such a sunny bright start and end to my day.  This is totally my new blog spot with a hot cup of coffee....on a coaster of course!!

  3. Also wanted to know what type of fabric you used on these? I want to recover a chair and not sure where to find the right kind of stain resistant fabric?

  4. What a transformation!! I am trying to find a new kitchen table since ours is WAY to big for our little bitty kitchen. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I am in awe over this transformation! I scored almost the same exact chairs a couple years ago for $24 for four at Goodwill and ended up giving them to my mom to transform. I would have kept them, but some of the caning had holes in it which made it a task I was not quite ready to conquer. I'm loving what you did with them, though!

  7. Aaaah! That's so incredibly amazing! Great work, Lani! I just found your blog via iheartorganizing as well, and I'm so happy I did! I've been trying to work up the courage to try a fixer-upper project with spray paint, but I've been so paranoid that I've been checking out everybody else's projects first to reassure myself that it can* be done, even by first-timers. I'll be checking back often! Good job again!
